  CORSOCK
The Co-ORdinating council for SOcial Concerns in Kodaikanal, shortly called CORSOCK is a society started in 1970 with chief aim to guide people of Kodaikanal to lead better way of life irrespective of caste creed or race. Mainly run by volunteers, made up as eight different groups for distinctively different objectives best controlled by one executive committe.
The good will centre : Forty women are employed to make or sell warm clothing and gift items. The income is used for charity purposes .CORSOCK's functions include a hospital, (Vanallen hospital situated above walkers walk) a home for the aged, a cottage craft centre (which is worth visiting) and training courses for women.
VARIHID : Van Allen rural integrated health development is a network which reaches out far flung remote interior villages where no Medicare is available. Doctors and paramedical staff even trek to distant villages and render medical aid with sole aim of teaching them preventive steps.CORSOCK also runs a mercy home on upper lake road which looks after destitutes by providing food, medical aid and warm clothing. CORSOCK also send patients who need specialist treatment to Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai at their expense. CORSOCK supplies free note books for 27 Tamil Schools and also screen health and educational films in outdoor locations.
  Kodaikanal Missionary Union
Originally started in 1890, it was functioning very well for several missions to mix with one another and perform games etc., Now only a very few missionaries are coming and hence the only activity by the union is maintaining a good library for the public.
  The Red Cross Society
The society is running a creche for the children of working women. Also runs a nursery school and a clinic which supply medicines at a nominal price to poor and needy.
  I.C.M. Sisters
This Belgian Convent sisters sell very fine lace work, embroidered linen, cakes, bread, honey and biscuits and use the proceeds to help the poor in the area. This convent is near sacred Heart Church at Munjikal.
  The Rotary Club
Started in 1973, the Club has 40 members of different nationalities. The club is doing devoted social service. They run variety entertainment shows and donate the collections to CORSOCK and Van Allen Hospital. They give free clothing to needy. The club meets every Thursday at Carlton Hotel.
  Kodaikanal Lions Club
The club started in the year 1985 and meets 1st and 3rd Friday of every month at Garden Manor Hotel. The club is under the jurisdiction of International Lions Dt. 324B.
  The Kodaikanal Club
This club was started in the year 1887, originally by British and American Settlers for playing Tennis and other games with a hall and library. Now the club which is a private one offers recreational facilities such as Tennis Badminton, Billiards ,Table Tennis, cards etc., The Club owns a fine library .The club has 14 chambers and a dining hall providing meals. Though it is for members only, visitors can become temporary members an introduction by permit members. The club functions at seven road.
  Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan
Started in 1982 at observatory road, the Bhavan offers a free library and reading room supplying mainly books on religion culture and heritage of India. This Kendra conducts cultural programmes in music, Harikatha dance and Bhajans, every weak. Lectures on philosophy, art and culture are arranged by popular speakers. Yoga classes are also conducted by expert yoga exponents. Yoga classes are very popular with locals and foreigners . The Bhavan has taken over the Hindu Missions Medicare unit from 1985 and supplies costly medicines and injections at much subsidized rates. The Hindu Mission has donated costly equipment's for a diagnostic lab which function at nominal rates for the lower income group. |
